Three Châteaux in a Day

Three châteaux is the most a Paris day trip can honestly deliver, and Chambord, Chenonceau and Cheverny is the combination the market has settled on. Several operators sell it; the coach tour at $103 is the cheapest way into all three, with entrance tickets included and 1,484 reviews behind it.

The arithmetic of a third château

A day trip has roughly six and a half usable hours once you subtract the five and a half spent driving 180 kilometres each way. Two châteaux turns that into 75 minutes at Chambord and two full hours at Chenonceau, with a long lunch stop. Three turns it into about an hour each.

An hour at Chambord is enough for the double-helix staircase, the François I apartments and the roof terrace if you walk straight to them. It is not enough for the estate, the stables, or standing still. An hour at Chenonceau covers the gallery and the kitchens but clips the gardens. Whether that is a fair trade is a question about you, not about the tour: people who want to see the range of Loire architecture do well on three, and people who want to absorb one building do not. What Cheverny adds that the other two do not

Cheverny is a 17th-century house rather than a Renaissance showpiece, and it is lived-in in a way neither of the others is — panelled rooms, hung paintings, a dining room that looks like a dining room. It is routinely described as the best-preserved interior of the three, and one operator’s listing notes that the Mona Lisa and other works were sheltered there during the Second World War.

In 1943 Hergé used it as the model for Moulinsart — Marlinspike Hall in English — Captain Haddock’s house in The Adventures of Tintin, removing the two outer wings so the building would read as something a man could inherit. Since 2001 the estate has run a permanent Tintin exhibition in an outbuilding, made with the Hergé Foundation. For travellers with children who have read the books, that is not a footnote.

This is the tour that sells all three guide formats

Two things to check before booking this particular tour

The summer weekday swap. On Mondays and Saturdays in summer the itinerary visits the Château Royal d’Amboise instead of Chambord. Amboise is a fine château and holds Leonardo da Vinci’s tomb, but if Chambord is why you are going, avoid those departures.
